Why is our cellulose so effective in case of a fire?
Chemical protection
Our cellulose is treated with boron salt, a natural and non-toxic product intended to delay the spread of fire. It is a flame retardant with the capacity to produce water when exposed to intense heat, resulting in delayed cellulose combustion. Boron salt has been used for the treatment of softwood lumber for millennia. It succeeded in protecting structures of castles and cathedrals from fire and mold for centuries.
Physical protection
The natural arrangement of cellulose fibres is compact and entangled which prevents air circulation. The boron salt treatment prevents the spreading of fire.
Physiological protection
In case of a fire, the cellulose fibres impregnated with boron salt will consume themselves, but will not ignite. It will only form a crust of carbon on the surface. The fibres that have not been in contact with flames will remain intact and will not conduct heat.
Thermal protection
Cellulose has low heat conductivity and a large phase shift time, which delay the migration of heat through the cellulose layer. This behaviour is also amplified by its low permeability to air.

Fire test with a torch on cellulose placed on a bare hand
- Cellulose does not ignite and produces low smoke (non-toxic emissions)
- A calcified surface crust forms on the cellulose in contact with the flame
- Neither flame nor heat passed through the layer of cellulose, even after 4 minutes
- Combustion stopped immediately after the torch was removed
- Only the part in contact with the flame was damaged
- Under the crust, the cellulose remained cold
